Organic skincare company launches on St Martins

Phoenix and Providence secures £6,000 grant from Isles of Scilly Voucher Scheme.

The St Martins based business is a skincare company that uses natural ingredients and seaweed harvested locally from the inland shores of the islands. It was launched in July 2020 by local Ella McLachlan after applying for a grant from the Isles of Scilly Voucher Scheme. This is a £2.1 million fund that offers local small and medium size businesses grants from £1,000 to £100,000 to start up or grow their existing business.

Phoenix and Providence were also supported with their application by Access to Finance, another ERDF project that offers fully funded support to local businesses looking to apply for funding to grow their business.

Ella says ‘ The Voucher Scheme grant not only gave me the financial support to bring my ideas of a seaweed skincare company to life, but also made me really consider the practical and administrative side of the business. Kirsty, Mimi and Eunice have been so supportive and the input from the team at Access to Finance was invaluable. They helped me develop a business plan that I still refer to now.

I have launched Phoenix & Providence organic skincare with four products and I’m looking forward to introducing a few new products next year. I have secured wholesale stockists and I’m looking forward to growing that area of business in the future.

The Voucher Scheme grant also helped me afford a website that I absolutely love and that is easy to use. I am introducing a few wellness products to sell alongside my skincare products and will be offering a choice of gift box options in time for Christmas. This again is an area that I’m excited to grow, as I love the idea of Phoenix & Providence becoming an online destination shop for people looking to put together their own self care package or send one as a gift.

I’m so grateful that the Voucher Scheme enabled me to pursue my business dream. While running a business poses many challenges, nothing beats waking up on a work day feeling excited to get started!’

Kirsty Graham, Engagement Officer from the Voucher Scheme says:

“It has been great to watch Phoenix and Providence develop from just the seed of an idea all the way through to the business launch and first year of business. We wish Ella all the best with her exciting new venture and look forward to watching the business evolve and grow further.

We want both existing businesses and start ups to be able to realise their growth ambitions with the financial support available from Voucher Scheme and to help create a sustainable economy for the Isles of Scilly.”

Voucher Scheme can currently offer funding support of up to 50% of the total project cost so please contact the team if you think you might have a project. The scheme is open until December 2021.
