Local builder receives funding support

Local resident Liam Greenlaw has successfully applied to the Isles of Scilly Voucher Scheme for funding support in early 2017. After working many years on the islands gaining experience and all the relevant skills and expertise, he decided it was time to set up his own building company, Greenlaw Building Services. The business offers a range of specialist building service including plastering , masonry, roofing and also general building works. The business received 60% funding investment towards the total cost of the project and supported the initial set up of the business including the purchase of scaffolding, tools and equipment as well as signage for the van and office set up costs.

Engagement Officer, Kirsty Graham says ‘This project has been a great fit for the scheme, it's a new business and has so far created the provision of 1 full time, year round position with the potential for more as the business continues to grow. It is a clear example of a project which hits the Outputs we are looking for like job creation and provision of new service, both of which are important in strengthening our island economy. It is great to see the business up and running and being so successful’

Liam says ‘applying to the Voucher Scheme has been a positive process for me, the whole application helped prepare me for self employment as it gave me an opportunity to sit back, plan and consider all aspects of the business before jumping in. It was a far simpler process than first expected and I received lots of support whenever I needed it. I’ve now completed my first year of trading and am really grateful for the step up.’

The Voucher Scheme team is currently applying for a funding extension to continue the programme through to 2021, so with that in mind it is still a good time to come and speak to us if you have any business start up or growth ideas. We will be able to support businesses with up to 60% of the total project cost depending on the project details. The Voucher Scheme is delivered by the Isles of Scilly Council and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF If you would like to find out more visit www.iosvoucherscheme.co.uk.
