Jewellery & craft business receives funding support

February 5, 2018

In early 2017 the Voucher Scheme provided funding support to new local resident Gail Payne to achieve a start up craft and jewellery business, which she runs from the Phoenix art studios at Porthmellon. The business received 70% funding support which enabled her to purchase high quality tools such as pliers, hammers and soldering tools to get the business up and running and create full time employment for herself.

Gail said 'taking up a studio space at Phoenix Craft Workshops was a brand new adventure for me after only recently moving to the Islands with my family.  Word of mouth led me to make enquiries with the Voucher Scheme.  Once I got my head around the process and paperwork involved my application was accepted and things moved along quite quickly.  The VS team were always friendly and available to help throughout.

The funding has been instrumental in getting my craft business going quickly and efficiently.  It gave me a real focus on the type of crafts I was looking to create.  I’ve been able to purchase a wide variety of high quality tools and studio equipment which has enabled my creativity to really blossom and grow.

I had an amazing first Summer season creating and selling a variety of unique crafts using local materials from silver and sea-glass jewellery to slate wall decor.  The success of my sales far exceeded my expectations and has brought me many commissions from enthusiastic visitors and locals.  It has also been really good fun!

Without the VS funding I would have really struggled to make this project financially viable, so I am extremely grateful for the support received.  I highly recommend anyone thinking about starting up a new business venture to look no further than the VS as it offers a wonderful opportunity here on the Isles of Scilly.”
